| Pro-war ads |
| Tuesday, August 28, 2007 |
Here's the story on MSNBC and CNBC and their not airing of pro-Iraq war ads.
Remember that beginning on Monday Sept. 3rd, SportsRap will air from 4-8pm on KARN 920AM. The 6-8pm hours will air on KARN 102.9fm as normal. My show will continue from 2:35pm till 5:49pm on KARN Newsradio 102.9fm.
I made the decision to split our AM and FM to give everyone what they wanted, those who like SportsRap (which we produce) can listen to it on KARN 920AM. Those who love my show with all the news, weather, and traffic can listen on the 102.9FM. It's a win,win situation.

| Planning A Garage Sale? |
| Friday, August 17, 2007 |
If you're thinking of having a garage sale, I hope you caught First News With Bob Steel on Friday August 17. We learned a lot from author Rosemary Chieppo who has written, "Clutter, Chaos & The Cure," a book the tells you how to organize your garage sale.
Many of you have called or written me, so I thought I would repeat some of the things we talked about. Rosemary gave us some great tips and some websites you may want to check out. These websites offer free virtual bulletin boards for garage sales. Try these sites: www.craigslist.org, www.garagesalehunter.com and www.yardsalesearch.com.
Here are some of Rosemary's tips: (Most of them are just common sense.)
1. Advertise in your local newspaper and don't forget local stations. Many offer want ads on their websites.
2. Post large cardboard/posterboard signs around your neighborhood area and use a single color with black magic marker. Make sure the background is light in color. (duh)
3. Yard sales with friends or family members can produce larger crowds but it's harder to keep up with the money.
4. You'll need lots of change, a calculator, extension cords to anything you're selling that's electronic, a full-length mirror so people can see how the clothing looks on them, and plastic bags for folks who may buy multiple items.
5. The top selling garage sale items? Rosemary says sports or soda memorabilia. She says other collectibles like vintage chrome appliances, anything Elvis (I would add anything Beatles), DVDs and CDs, children/baby clothes; classic toys; and decorative household items such as candleholders and lamps.
6. Create zones for different kinds of items you're selling. "Housewares", 'Sports Gear", "Tools" "Kids," etc. Clean everything to make it look as new as possible.
7. Encourage browsing by setting up tables to form aisles so items are accessible from all sides. People backtrack a lot in yard sales.
8. Price it right. For a list of popular prices for garage sales go to: www.realsimple.com/tagsale
9. To sell to men: They shop differently. They shop with a goal in mind. They shop quickly. If you're offering guy stuff put it up front and have that extension cord ready if you're selling anything electronic. Items must be marked! Most men won't take the time to ask the price. (Sorta like when we're lost and won't ask for directions.)
10. When the sale is over --- don't take the junk back into the house. Give it to charity and get a tax write-off.
Rosemary adds that the months of August and September are good months when kids are going back to college. The most popular period for yard/garage sales are from June through October.
A Bob tip: The flea market people come early. Expect your biggest crowds around 8 a.m.
I would add one more tip to Rosemary's list: Don't take checks. I sold an Apple II computer at a yard sale once and took a check for $50 --- the computer was in great shape --- the check bounced.
Have a great garage sale and keep listening to First News With Bob Steel. |

| Country Singer Bailey Hefley Visits First News with Bob Steel |
|
Little Rock teenager Bailey Hefley is a 16-year-old Junior at Pulaski Academy. You may need to remember that name! Bailey is a gifted country singer and in my opinion, we're going to be hearing a lot more about this young woman in the future.
Bailey and her mother, Lisa visited with us Friday, August 17 on First News with Bob Steel and Bailey performed one of her songs for us live with mom providing harmony. If you attended the USC game last year in Fayetteville, Bailey sang the national anthem before the game. Come to think of it, that might have been the highlight of the night but that's another story.
Bailey is currently working with one of Nashville's hottest young producers, Bobby Pinson. Pinson is a top songwriter as well as a producer. He's helping to develop Bailey and her launch is planned as soon as she completes her senior year next year at Pulaski Academy.
What great parents she has. They know she has a rare gift and she could probably be on her way right now but they want to wait and let her enjoy her teenage years as every kid should. Nashville will just have to wait and if Nashville doesn't happen, Bailey is gifted in math and science too so, she has a fall-back position. She may become a doctor.
Her dad, Bill is an orthopedic surgeon in Little Rock. Mom Lisa is pretty busy too. Bailey has one sister Hannah, 14, and two brothers, Will 11, and Ron 7. But it's so smart of her parents to not rush her into possible stardom. How many young stars have you seen that you felt maybe the early start could be part of their problems?
Back to her producer Bobby Pinson. Pinson wrote Sugarland's number 1 country hit "Want To," Trent Tomlinson's, "One Wing in the Fire" and he has a cut on Toby Keith's new CD. Pinson has been recording Bailey in the studio over the past several months. She has preliminary recordings of two songs (we played one of them on First News) and she plans to record at least two more by next year. When the time is right, Pinson will pitch her to record labels.
As I said earlier, I think you'll be hearing a lot more about Bailey Hefley in the future. We were privileged to present her to you on First News with Bob Steel.

| Oklahoma immigration laws |
|
Sorry this took so long but here's the Oklahoma Immigration Law that goes into effect Nov. 1st 2007. Now that Oklahoma and Tennessee have toughened their laws will we see more illegals coming to Arkansas? The Governor says we have to wait and see what other states have done and work with the Feds. The Feds have done nothing for over 20 years. Gov. don't expect the Feds to change, so look down your pants, make sure you have a pair, call a special session and toughen up our immigration laws or we're see that 70,000 illegal number balloon in Arkansas shoot up really really fast. Remember the 170 million we're all ready dishing out is only for education and prisons. It will be interesting to see what the number climbs to when health care and the rest is factored into our immigration support costs.

| Don't Snitch |
| Monday, August 13, 2007 |
Here's the article that prompted the topic today. It's from 60 Minutes. I just found it strange that people wouldn't want a murder or rapist to be brought to justice.
Tomorrow we'll talk about the draft.
